About Emma Procter

I came to painting later in life, although creativity has always been there in one form or another.  Painting gives me a way of expressing and exploring the things I feel and experience, and has become an important part of how I make sense of the world.

Based in the Cambridgeshire countryside, I create intuitive abstract paintings in acrylic.  I don't begin with sketches or a fixed plan.  Each painting develops layer by layer through expressive brushwork, areas of transparency and occasional metallic pigments that shift as the light changes.  I respond to what appears on the canvas, rather than trying to control it.  Every work is an original, created intuitively in my studio or garden.

Words are also part of my creative process.  Poems and the title often begin to emerge while I'm still painting, becoming part of the way each piece takes shape.  Every painting has a poem that accompanies it, not to explain what it means, but as another part of the work itself.

Nature inevitably finds its way into my work.  Time spent among trees, beneath open skies and in quiet landscapes changes the way I experience the world.  I'm drawn to the subtle patterns, rhythms and moments of connection that often go unnoticed.​  Much of my work is also led by emotions and memories, exploring atmosphere, feeling and the things that sit beneath the surface of our everyday lives.

I don't expect you to see exactly what I see in a painting.  For me, part of the beauty of abstract art is the space it leaves for you to find something of your own within it.​
