The Things We Refuse To See

What we Refuse to See abstract acrylic painting by Emma Procter

Acrylic on canvas

30 x 24cm

2026

Artist's Comment:

"I developed this painting through layers of colour, loose brushwork and marks that were gradually covered, broken through and revealed again.  I kept allowing areas to appear and disappear, leaving glimpses of what was underneath rather than bringing everything fully into view.

There was something in this process that I kept returning to; the difference between what is hidden and what is there to be seen.  Somethings need to be looked at, even when everything in us wants to turn away."

Poem for The Things We Refuse To See

Some things appear so clearly,

there can be no mistaking them.

And still we look beyond,

around,

anywhere but there.

Perhaps knowing is not the same as seeing.

Perhaps seeing asks something of us

we are not always ready to give.

So we let our eyes pass over,

and leave untouched,

the things we refuse to see.
